Examples: The atomic number of the first element, hydrogen, is 1. The atomic number of copper is 29. Element Atomic Mass or Atomic Weight Most periodic tables include a value for atomic mass (also called atomic weight) on each element tile. For a single atom of an element, this would be a whole number, adding the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons together for the atom. However, the value given in the periodic table is an average of the mass of all isotopes of a given element. While the number of electrons does not contribute significant mass to an atom, isotopes have differing numbers of neutrons, which do affect mass. How to Identify It: The atomic mass is a decimal number. The number of significant figures varies from one table to another. Its common to list values to two or four decimal places. Also, the atomic mass is recalculated from time to time, so this value may change slightly for elements on a recent table compared with an older version. Examples: The atomic mass of hydrogen is 1.01 or 1.0079. The atomic mass of nickel is 58.69 or 58.6934. Element Group Many periodic tables list numbers for element groups, which are columns of the periodic table. The elements in a group share the same number of valence electrons and thus have many common chemical and physical properties. However, there wasnt always a standard method of numbering groups, so this can be confusing when consulting older tables. How to Identify It: The number for the element group is cited above the top element of each column. The element group values are integers running from 1 to 18. Examples: Hydrogen belongs to element group 1. Beryllium is the first element in group 2. Helium is the first element in group 18. Element Period The rows of the periodic table are called periods. Most periodic tables do not number them  because they are fairly obvious, but some tables  do. The period indicates the highest energy level attained by electrons of an atom of the element in the ground state. How to Identify It: Period numbers are located on the left-hand side of the table. These are simple integer numbers. Examples: The row starting with hydrogen is 1. The row starting with lithium is 2. Electron Configuration Some periodic tables list the electron configuration of an atom of the element, usually written in shorthand notation to conserve space. Most tables omit this value because it takes up a lot of room. How to Identify It: This isnt a simple number but includes the orbitals. Examples: The electron configuration for hydrogen is 1s1. Homeschooling with Dysgraphia

Parents of children with special needs often worry that theyre not qualified to homeschool. They feel that they dont have the knowledge or skill to meet their childs needs. However,  the ability to offer a one-on-one learning environment along with practical accommodations and modifications often makes homeschooling the ideal situation for special needs children.  Ã‚  Dyslexia,  dysgraphia, and dyscalculia are three learning challenges that may be well-suited for a homeschool learning environment. Ive invited Shawna Wingert to discuss the challenges and benefits of homeschooling students with dysgraphia, a learning challenge that impacts a persons ability to write. Shawna writes about motherhood, special needs, and the beauty of everyday messes at Not the Former Things. She is also the author of two books, Everyday Autism and Special Education at Home. What unique challenges do students with dysgraphia and dyslexia face? My oldest son is 13 years old. He started reading when he was only three years old. He is currently taking college-level courses and is quite academically advanced,  yet he struggles to write his full name. My youngest son is 10 years old. He cannot read above a first-grade level and has a dyslexia diagnosis. He participates in many of his older brother’s courses, as long as they are verbal lessons. He is incredibly bright. He, too, struggles to write his full name. Dysgraphia is a learning difference that affects both of my children, not just in their ability to write, but often in their experiences interacting in the world. Dysgraphia is a condition that makes written expression extremely challenging  for children. It is considered a processing disorder – meaning that the brain has trouble with one or more of the steps, and/or the sequencing of the steps, involved in writing a thought down on paper. For example, in order for my oldest son to write, he must first bear the sensory experience of holding a pencil appropriately. After several years and various therapies, he still struggles with this most fundamental aspect of writing. For my youngest, he has to think about what to communicate, and then break that down into words and letters. Both of these tasks take much longer for children with challenges such as dysgraphia and dyslexia than for an average child. Because each step in the writing process takes longer, a child with dysgraphia inevitably struggles to keep up with his peers - and at times, even his own thoughts - as he laboriously puts pen to paper. Even the most basic sentence requires an inordinate amount of thought, patience, and time to write. How and why does  dysgraphia  affect writing? There are many reasons that a child may struggle with effective written communication, including​​: Graphomotor processing  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ trouble with the fine motor coordination required to manipulate a writing instrumentAttention disorders  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ difficulty planning and seeing writing tasks through to completionSpatial ordering  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ challenges in organizing letters and words on the written pageSequential ordering – difficulty in determining the logical order of letters, words, and/or ideasWorking memory – trouble recalling and holding onto the information the writer is trying to communicateLanguage processing – difficulty in using and comprehending language in any format In addition, dysgraphia often occurs in conjunction with other learning differences including dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, and autism spectrum disorder. In our case, it is a combination of several of these difficulties than affect my sons’ written expression. I am often asked, â€Å"How do you know it’s dysgraphia and not just laziness or a lack of motivation?† (Incidentally, I am often asked this type of question about all of my sons’ learning differences, not just dysgraphia.) My answer is usually something like, â€Å"My son has been practicing writing his name since he was four years old. He is thirteen now, and he still wrote it incorrectly when he signed his friend’s cast yesterday. That’s how I know. Well, that and the hours of evaluations he underwent to determine a diagnosis.† What are some of the signs of dysgraphia? Dysgraphia can be difficult to identify in the early elementary school years. It becomes increasingly apparent over time. The most common signs of dysgraphia include: Messy handwriting that is difficult to read  Slow and laborious writing  paceInappropriate spacing of letters and wordsTrouble gripping a writing instrument or maintaining grip over timeDifficulty organizing information when writing These signs can be difficult to assess. For example, my youngest son has great handwriting, but only because he painstakingly works to print every single letter. When he was younger, he would look at the handwriting chart and mirror the letters exactly. He is a natural artist so he works very hard to make sure his writing â€Å"looks nice†. Because of that effort, it can take him much longer to write a sentence than most children his age. Dysgraphia causes understandable frustration. In our experience, it has also caused some social issues, as my sons often feel inadequate with other children. Even something like signing a birthday card causes significant stress. What are some of the strategies for dealing with dysgraphia? As we have become more aware of what dysgraphia is, and how it affects my sons, we have found some effective strategies that help minimize its effects.   Writing in other mediums – Often, my sons are better able to practice the art of written expression when using something other than a pencil. When they were younger, it meant practicing spelling words by writing them in shaving cream on the shower wall. As they grew, they both graduated to using Sharpie markers (making grip much easier) and then finally onto other implements.Allowing larger text – My sons write much larger  than the lines on the college ruled paper in their notepads. Often, they write even larger than the wide ruled paper in their elementary notepads. Allowing larger text size enables them to focus on the sequencing and motor skills associated with writing. Over time, as they have become more comfortable, their written text has become smaller.Occupational therapy – A good occupational therapist knows how to help with pencil grip and the fine motor skills required for writing. We have had success with OT, and I would highly recommend occupationa l therapy as a starting point.Accommodations – Speech-to-text applications and programs, offering additional time for written testing, allowing keyboarding for taking notes, and taking frequent breaks are all accommodations we employ to help my children write more effectively. New technologies have become an invaluable resource for my children, and I am grateful we live in a time where they have access to these types of accommodations. Each homeless people said that, they are facing gender, cultural and racial discrimination. The government shelters are not enough to provide them security and safety. It is quite evident from the interview that poverty is the only reason of their homelessness. They were taught about the rules and regulations that have been made by the government to fulfill their basic needs (Krausz et al. 2013). Role of the stakeholders The stakeholders such as the local government, police, health department, shelter house workers, their former employers and the existing family members will be informed about their state in a written document (Berwick, Nolan and Whittington 2017). Their situations would not be disclosed, however, they would be informed about the risk factors they are suffering from. These informations will be stored securely and the Australian human rights will be informed about the issue to provide these homeless people with their basic needs (Guerrero, Henwood and Wenzel 2014). The rate of young adults inclined to the substance abuse has spiked considerably in the past year and the number continues to rise further. However, according to the framework of AOD, alcohol or drug abuse is a complex behavior, and there are various internal and external risk factors associated with the issue of homelessness and abuse, and while eliciting information about the clients one this sensitive issues critical thinking skills need to employed like compassionate and persuasive questioning, listening approach and complex risk assessment (Ewer et al. 2015). As a youth worker, one of the greatest restrictive challenges that I have seen the young addicts face is the shame and discrimination according to the practice standards of the AOD, the assessment procedure needs to employ non-discriminating and non-judgmental approach. Judgmental approach can often be interpreted as insulting or patronizing to the clients which in turn can contribute to growing resilience and non-compliance. Hence, I ensured maintaining professional boundaries while assessing or working with the clients so that my approach did not appear as judgmental to the clients. Another very important requirement for a youth worker is to make the client comfortable in the care facility which will not only restore the mental health of the client but also incorporates a sense of safety and wellbeing (Davis and Kelly 2012). In order to do so, I have attempted to facilitate acceptance of the condition of client in my approach and have taken efforts to assess his situation without contradicting is personal beliefs or values. A key sector in the AOD framework is promoting self determination of the client while motivating him to recover from the addiction. In my own experience as a youth worker I have observed clients investing higher efforts in trying to implement the preventative strategies to avoid alcohol or drugs when they have actively participated in designing those strategies. Hence, I have tried to involve my clients more into the decision making procedure of care planning so that they understand the severity of their own issues and foresee the impact that the preventative strategies can make. Client centeredness is an extremely important aspect of youth work as the strategies implemented for one person might not yield any result for another. For instance, one of my client had been an orphan slum worker with alcohol addiction and anger management issues, while the other had been a drug addict who had gone astray from a considerably good socio-economic background. For both of them I have employed a client centered approach fr each of them taking into account the specific needs and the specific triggers leading them, to the present condition while planning their care (Health.gov.au. 2017). The legislative guidelines of the AOD sector of Australia, client privacy and confidentiality needs to be maintained at all circumstances. In my own practice I have attempted to maintain the confidentially of the clients optimally while informing the key stakeholders about their situation and the risk factors they are under. However, as some of the information shraed by th client needs to be conveyed so that necessary care actions can be taken. Hence, I have also ensured that the client signed a permission to exchange information consent form. Although I have taken optimal care to ensure that minimal and unavoidable information is shared and the private information are maintained in a secure manner (Brown et al. 2016). John Hale Vs. John Proctor Rev. John Hale vs. John Proctor The characters of John Hale and John Proctor in ?The Crucible? can be compared and contrasted according to their key traits, goals, and tendencies to change. These characters are probably the two most important characters in the play. They both are strong men mentally and are proud of what they accomplish. Reverend John Hale and John Proctor can be compared and contrasted according to their key traits. Reverend Hale is a man in his late forties. He is intelligent and very proud. He believes that he earned his titled as Reverend, the title was not only given to him. John Proctor is a man in his mid-thirties and like Reverend Hale he is proud of what he does. Proctor is also a man who is physically strong since he is always working on his farm. He is a person who does not like hypocrites or frauds. He is also stubborn and not easily led into things. People respect him and fear him as well. These two characters can also be compared according to their goals. Reverend Hale's goal is to save the citizens of Salem from being condemned to death and of being accused of witchcraft. If someone is accused, Reverend Hale wants to get that person freed and prevent them from an unnecessary death. John Proctor's goal is to first get his wife freed from jail after being accused of witchcraft. He also wants to get Valentin Benitez himself free and wants Hathorne and Danforth to see that there are no witches in Salem and that all the deaths that they have created are unreasonable and irrelevant. They can be further compared and contrasted by their tendencies to change. Reverend Hale usually is a straight faced, stubborn man who stands for what he believes in. At the end of the play he cries as John Proctor is taken off to be hanged before the whole village. John Proctor was also a stubborn man that did not deny what he believed, but at key times in the play he changed what he was saying and fighting for against the court. He first said he did not practice witchcraft and had never seen the Devil, but afterwards he said the opposite. He said that he was an evil person and that he did practice evil acts. In Act Two he also went from saying that he was a good man to finally confessing to being an adulterer and a lecher. The more appealing character was John Proctor because through his stubbornness and inflexibility he was a more interesting character. As it was said in the earlier part of this paper, the headstones are often engraved with images of rosary and crucifix. The headstones of deceased children have angels on them. Also, I saw an image of Blessed Virgin Mary within the cemetery. This is why I thought that Filipinos and other clients of the cemetery are devoted Catholics. Whetten Kim S. Cameron. The cafe pub was not so busy at noontime. Unconscious distraction to the conversation at the adjacent table immersed me deeply in self-reflection. That was a conversation between a superior and his three subordinates, an usual coffee talk as I offered to my subordinates countless times in the past years, but now, an unusual talk as I concepted not a talk scene but a show of many vivid strategies and skills in practice. In retrospect the beginning of my career, considering my lacking of maritime background, and also for attaining a better understanding about marine survey, I gave up all my Sundays and holidays for studying marine books and going through hundreds of veteran surveyors survey reports. From the second month of my join-in, I can manage my job as an assistant without making many mistakes. In 2007, I was promoted to the position of Deputy Manager of this company, with full responsibility for routine survey organization and supervision. However, a person with strong working abilities doesnt mean that he or she can perform management very well. In my understanding, management consists of only two parts, managing business and, managing men. I am good at managing business (narrow meaning), but really awkward at managing humans, those employees younger or older than me, those colleague graduates, Captains or Chief Mates with years of marine experience, and even those under-educated foremen or stevedores from ports. What confronted with me was a real harsh dilemma situation. On the one hand, I want to implement strictly the survey regulations on procedures and standards and ultimately to improve our service standard to clients; however on the another, the really challengeable complex employee composition for me a green-hand manager to cope with. Very soon all my disadvantage as of lacking experience in management exposed. Earthquake is a nightmare. Almost at the same time when the 2008 Earthquake happened, our company experienced our own Earthquake, which triggered by the intensification of accumulated contradictions and divergences to conflicts between I (as a manager) and majority subordinates. Deeply involved in the battle, I faced with a situation wholly out of my control. After the company Earthquake, this is the first thing I focused on to improve my interpersonal relationships, to stand up from the place where I fall. In the aspect of coaching, I began with setting complete and detailed standards covering each kind of our survey business. And in our self-developed MIS system, all those standards set were then well integrated into the Employee Performance Evaluation Section, which would automatically affect the scale/grade of employees working allowance as well as their year-end bonus on a case-by-case basis. Driven by such kind of economic force, team members actively study the work regulations and procedure guidelines to meet the standards, and also initially seek coaching chance to acquire more advice and information for better performance. We also scheduled some periodic training programs to them. Being open and make my support available, I gradually won their respect and trust in the company. Regarding to the Eight Attributes of Supportive Communication, my performance before the company Earthquake actually disobeyed most of the rules, especially when I giving negative feedback. When a guy failed to finish a task up to the standard, I always started our talk in this way, You made same mistake again. I have told you this matter many many times. You just one ear in and one ear out. Do have any hearing disorders or understanding problems? Why this happened again. Now, as our client asked me why, you tell me why Yes, I did act in this way, frequently in the first few years before Earthquake. Thinking in others shoes now, if I faced with a manager communicate in such manner, how could I expect building/enhancement of positive relationship between the two communicating parties? Good Vs. Evil in To Kill a Mockingbird and Macbeth In literature, "evil often triumphs but never conquers." By definition, a triumph is only short- term. For example, something short- term would be an achieved title, a victor in a battle, or a winner in a game. These three things are only temporary, as triumphs usually are in novels. By definition, when something is conquered, it remains conquered perpetually. Usually the evil force is unable to conquer, because of the opposite side's mentality. Because of these definitions, this statement is showing that even though evil characters or actions prevail in battles or events, the feat would not last forever, especially in the hearts and minds of the opposite side. I agree with this statement because there is proof that this is true in novels that I have read. Many novels have this common theme: good versus evil. This theme is unquestionably shown in two works, Macbeth and To Kill A Mockingbird. Macbeth is a tragic play about a man who lusted after power, stole the throne of Scotland from the rightful Prince Malcolm, and threw the country into chaos throughout his evil reign. In the end, his own greed and guilt consumed him. Ironically, at the beginning of the play, Macbeth has everything going for him. This is an example of situational irony, because the audience sees him acquiring all of this power very rapidly, and would not expect that he would lose it all in the end. Macbeth, manipulated and encouraged by his own wife, murders King Duncan in order to seize the throne for himself. The stolen crown gives him no satisfaction, for he is riddled with guilt over the murder and fear of being discovered. All of these foul things Macbeth does to gain the throne are considered to be evil triumphs, which fuels his greed even more. In his own mind, he faces serious internal conflict, seeing these triumphs as not enough, because he wants to achieve absolute power. The cl imax of the play is at the banquet scene, when Macbeth can no longer hide his anguish and convicts himself saying "Thou canst say I did it." From this point on in the play, this is the end for Macbeth.

A Study in Adaptation Essay

Among the monographs found in the Culture and Ecology in East Africa Project is that of the work of Walter Goldschmit, entitled â€Å"The Sebei: A Study in Adaptiona. † It is among the ethnographic studies conducted to shed light on a particular community, which is that of Sebei. The project previously mentioned to which the monograph belongs is that of the University of California in Los Angeles which also carries the research design that was followed by the entire project (Mead 938). It has become important to evaluate this study because of the important role it plays in the field of ethnography and in the lives of the Sebei people. This paper will include the synopsis, a critique of the book, and the relationship with the materials and discussions found in the class. Synopsis of the Book The book primarily focuses on the people of Sebei, the socio-economic modes followed by the people there, and the adaptations which has happened throughout the existence of the community. People from Sebei speak Nilotic and have a connection with the Nandi and Kipsigis (MacGaffey 110). These people lives in the southeastern portion of Uganda and the elements of this community which has been discussed include the â€Å"history, environment, policy, social organization, animal husbandry, agriculture, a cash economy, sexual roles and marriage, child rearing, initiation, and the Sebei belief system† (Beidelman 542). The wide variety of the factors that have been covered in the study has been instrumental to the focus of the book, which is that of the ways of living of the people and how they have economically survived the environment they lived in. There are two environments which have been considered in the book to show the adaptive processes of the community under study. One is the area which is well-watered and is situated in the slopes of the mountains and the second is in the dry lands of the plains. With the conditions found in the said communities, there are also adaptive measures which have been taken by the people in terms of the production of their food and ways of living. One community concentrated on the hunting and gathering means of production because of the factors in the environment which makes this the most acceptable form of gathering food and sustaining the needs of the community. On the other hand, it is agriculture which has become the primary mode of economic production followed because of the availability of fertile soil that could be used for crops. Moreover, access to water is available that makes this a better option for the people. More so, it is seen to be the most effective in consideration of the available resources and conditions for the people. Economics-wise, this is the best methods for the respective communities discussed. Through time, it has been proven that Sebei people have the capability to adapt easily to changes in their environment and new situations which they are placed in (Mead 938). It has been shown in the book that the people have been able to be in contact with the Europeans when this group has been in a point where they are trying to adapt with the demands brought about by intra-African connections. The flexibility in adapting to such cultures has been carried out by the group by following the previous methods which have been used before by the group. It has been proven to be an effective pattern for the people since their first interaction with other cultures. Critique of the Book This particular book can be considered as one of the best monographs that have been written of an Ugandan community because of its succinctness and thoroughness. The ability of the author to present facts and data near what is real is considered to be a vital element of the author’s work. The author’s ability to record and research the past of the community has been helpful. The author, himself, has done quite an extensive job in proving the authenticity of his claims where there are primary evidences, such as photos, that has been shown together with the narratives provided. In writing a book, the ability of the author to provide evidences, especially in the field of ethnography, is considered to be vital in establishing the credibility and authenticity of the monograph. In a sense, this adds to the ability of the monograph to convince its readers that what is being said and shown in the account is true. Moreover, the book has shown one community but the picture that has been drawn and what has been learned over the discussions made of the particular community studied can be used in order to understand the African perspective. More so, the means of adoption that has been studied can be taken to a larger picture where it is also seen to exist in other areas and in different times. It has been found that the general perspective that can be used in order to interpret that of the Sebei culture is that â€Å"the maladies of the social system seem to outweigh their strengths† (Goldschmidt 338). With this particular statement, the author is then able to show that he has been able to observe the communities with a keen eye and relate it to the rest of the elements in the environment that surround the community. The author does not simply focus on what can be found within the community but also observes how it relates to the different links formed. More so, there is judgment that is found for these relationships from where a strong conclusion can be made. This monograph serves as a very good reading material for the members of the academic institutions and the epistemic communities from a wide variety of fields. Where field observations and thorough data collection has been done, there is the worthiness of examining the material and using it as a foundation of different researches. More so, an understanding of the different elements of the community can be easily derived through a reading of this material because of the substantial data that can be found here. This is not only for the purpose of studying communities but can also be taken by people from different fields such as psychology, economics, policy-making, sociology, and others in order to make researches and decisions. Relation to Class Materials and Discussions Understanding the book has been made easier because of the foundation laid by the class discussions and materials. The concepts that have been clarified in relation to culture, communities, and globalization has become an integral part of understanding how and why the Sebei communities had to adjust to the changing setting of the world and the communities which belong to it. It is difficult for a reader to understand the complex parts of the monograph if one would not take into consideration the aspects which relate the community to the changes in its surroundings. If the reader would not have the respective concepts and ideas, he/she might be limited to understanding the community in isolation and forget to relate it to the world outside the said community.
